Mylen Recruitment - Specialists in Technical Recruitment
Technology Consultant (Defence)
Job ID - J007994
Salary - Negotiable
Technology Consultant in the Defence Group

Our client has a fast-paced, energetic working environment in which you will be regularly exposed to new problems that require pushing the boundaries of engineering. The type and variety of the projects that they undertake requires the very best people, but provides opportunities for professional development that you would struggle to match elsewhere. Innovation is at the heart of the business and they encourage and support all their staff in bringing forward ideas that will improve their ability to deliver better solutions for their customers.
In most cases the roles involve working with a range of hardware and software engineers as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
They provide all the training and support that you need to complete your projects and grow your skills, and the nature of their business means that they are able to support career progression in many dimensions, including technical, commercial and managerial. The rapid tempo and wide variety of projects means that you will always be working on something new, and learning and developing fast.
They are based in pleasant countryside close to the vibrant city of Cambridge, with easy road and rail access. They provide a friendly and supportive working environment, including a calendar of regular social events in which to unwind.

Our clients have a Technology Consultant vacancy within their expanding defence team, which provides skills that complement those of the engineering design teams.
The vacancy is open to both graduates and those with 2 or 3 years of post-graduate experience (e.g. via a PhD or in employment). We would be particularly interested to hear from any candidate who has current or previous employment in an applied research institution (such as a government laboratory).

Skills and Experience
You will need to have a strong analytical ability, but also a good grasp of real-world physics and engineering.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the technology innovation activities related mainly to our low to mid TRL activities; creating new ideas and concepts that will answer enduring technical challenges that their clients face. It will involve practical experimentation supported by mathematical modelling and simulation of proposed solutions and their environment to assess suitability and potential performance. It will require an understanding of the types of sensor technology that our clients specialise in, and their physical performance and limitations. You will need to support the engineering teams in the transfer of concepts and ideas into practical technology demonstrations.
The expectation is that a physics background would be highly suitable for this, but a maths or engineering background may also be suitable. A first class academic record is likely to be essential.
A successful candidate for this role will have:
A strong understanding of physics and engineering from first principles, and ability to use this understanding to generate novel approaches to enduring technical challenges.
The ability to work with unbounded, or loosely bounded, problems.
To derive mathematical models for complex, real-world systems and environments.
Ideally, experience of planning and conducting practical experiments using sensor technology
Data analysis and signal processing skills
Excellent oral and written skills, able to present complex technical concepts in clear and concise language.
Programming ability in one or more languages (e.g. C, C++, Java, Matlab, Python).

One or more of the following areas of domain experience (or similar) is also required:
Communication systems
Radar systems
Inertial sensing systems (accelerometers and gyroscopes)
Electronic surveillance technologies
Image/video processing/analytics
Unmanned systems (sensing, control, autonomy)
Acoustics and sonar
Due to the nature of this position, candidates must be willing to undergo, and eligible to achieve, HMG security clearance up to SC level.
This position offers a competitive salary and benefits package, private medical insurance and pension.
