SYSTEMS DESIGN AUTHORITY

1.1 Scope of Role:
This team are the responsible engineers for their specific focus of product, technology or network, owning the design baseline and providing service design consultancy to the Engineering teams. The SDA will typically engage at the preparation for PDR stage of the project and will be a key member of the design process as the design progresses. Occasional travel is expected to the Ground Station installations and customer locations in the UK. As part of the role there may also be a requirement to travel to customer installations overseas.

1.2 Objectives of the role
The role is key to Airbus Defence and Space service delivery enabling project timelines and revenue. The role holder will be expected to oversee the integrity of engineered and documented designs. Ownership of assigned design baselines are key and the role holder will be expected to champion and represent the engineering disciplines during the high pressure project environment in order to avoid early life failures of the customer service.
As the technical reference in the Engineering teams, it's important that the role holder is pro active in highlighting and recommending solutions to technical requirements and issues.

1.4 Primary Duties:
The SDA will include:

" Ensure that designs are adequate and meet the customer requirement.
" Ensure that the requirements are fully captured, managed, analysed and understood.
" Prepare PDR designs and present where required.
" Ensure that all design reviews run in a quality manner and add value to the engineering process (PDR, CDR, FsDR)
" Ensure that the design and selected equipment and operational procedures satisfy the requirements and they represent the chosen solution concept;
" Ensure that Verification and Qualification activities are conducted in a traceable manner (to the customer requirement)
" Establish the design requirements and ensure that design output records accurately reflect the design basis.
" Allocate and manage the naming, numbering and network IP address schemes and conventions.
" Capacity Planning & records (Ports, devices, modules, IOS variants).
" Ensure design control and ultimate technical adequacy of the design solution.
" Chairing Design Reviews as required, and supporting the Change Management Process as authorising signatories(RFC) for all Skynet 5, GiN based M2 and M1 services.
" Ensure that the design requirements and design records are fully identified and configured in line with business configuration management requirements and current best practice
" Lead design activities, for example those associated with design analysis and calculations.
" Ensure that implementation teams understand the expected design outputs and basis for the design; provide guidance and advice as required
" Sign-off authority for design documentation, TRR's and TRB's.
" Primary Interface into the Support Organisation for the nominated product, or service.
" Provide strategic consultation to engineering departments and the organisation on technology direction.
" Interface into network strategy and technological roadmap
" Supporting Incident Management escalations providing diagnosis and recommendations.
" Ensuring that designs are consistent across our Managed Services so that efficiencies can be achieved in area's such as:
o Reusable network configuration
o Reusable knowledge and skills
o Simple, reusable, consistent and robust integration to other facets of Managed Services that the design needs to plug up to.
o Has acceptance from the wider SDA team on design strategies, which should be shared frequently
1.5 Competencies
Within the boundaries of the assigned SDA scope the role holder will be expected to work under own initiative and drive integrity of all design inputs to the service delivery lifecycle.
They will be expected to be able to handle multiple projects and be prepared to rationalise their time and work with the teams to optimise their efforts to service and individual priorities.
The role holder will be an accomplished engineer who will act with confidence and authority being the expert in their field.

1.6 Skills
The range of skills required across the SDA team is wide, they are expected to provide expert level support to the business in the following example areas:

" IP, VOIP and MPLS systems.
" Satellite communications systems.
" Encryption devices including DCAP, Mini Catapan and Ectocryp.
" Serial communication protocols.
" Test methods and good practise
" Good report writing and general communication skills.
" Must be analytical and able to diagnose and recommend problem resolution.

1.7 Decision Making
As the SDA you will be expected to advise and guide the Engineering team with the minimum of reference to management. You will be expected to review and analyse the high level design and service requirements such that the engineering design and implementation are efficiently carried out. You will be considered to be the escalation point for technical matters and will be expected to arbitrate between difficult design choices.

1.8 Qualifications
" Engineering degree or equivalent expert level qualifications / specialisations
" Specific training and competencies in:
o IP Architectures of Cisco / Juniper based networks
o Security / Cryptographic equipment
o Video / Voice systems / solutions
o Network Management Methodologies & Systems

1.9 Experience
The role holder will be expected to have been in the telecoms or satellite communications industries for at least 10 years, depending on relevance of roles.
It is expected that the role holder will have had most if not all of the following experience.
" Proven Hands on implementation experience
" Recognised design leadership in past roles
" Technical project management
" Demonstrated knowledge of other area's outside of main SDA competence (good around knowledge of Service features)
